**Contains spoilers for Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove
Another challenge issued today involved creating your dream guy from your favorite book boyfriends from our friends over at IB Book Blogging.
I have to admit I struggled with this one.I know I’m supposed to compile a frankenstein boyfriend and I suppose I could. I mean from Snape’s love for Lily to Mr. Darcy’s immovable dogmatism, there are ample men in literature who make my heart go pitter patter. But truth be told my true love will forever be Augustus McCrae from Lonesome Dove.
Sure he can be a lazy sod, but his good humor, zest for life, dedication to honor, and generosity of spirit make him utterly perfect in my book. But it was his love stories with Lori, Clara, and Woodrow that made me forever fall hopelessly in love.
And okay the fact that he may have been played by Robert Duvall in the television adaptation sure doesn’t hurt. But more than anything, McCrae’s death in the book marked the first time I cried so hard while reading a book that I had to put it down. I first read this book when I was 14 years old and my love for Gus has stood the test of time. Even as I find myself understanding and appreciating the character of Woodrow more as I get older, it will forever by Augustus McCrae who has my heart.
